Rozwijana od XV w. Twierdza Wisłoujście była przez długi czas główną fortyfikacją nadmorską Gdańska, która zmieniała się wraz z przekształceniami ujścia Wisły oraz rozwojem techniki wojskowej. Artykuł skupiony jest na ostatnich etapach jej rozwoju w XIX w. i rozbudowie zewnętrznych umocnień, kiedy starano się utrzymać panowanie nad ujściem Wisły w obliczu znacznych przemian geomorfologicznych wybrzeża. Omówiono w nim dzieje zewnętrznych pierścieni twierdzy: tzw. Szańca Wschodniego i Szańca Zachodniego, a także Szańca Mewiego jako wysuniętej ku morzu części twierdzy i łącznika z zespołem fortyfikacji Westerplatte i Nowego Portu. Utracone obecnie relacje przestrzenne twierdzy i Szańca Mewiego wymagają podkreślenia, szczególnie w kontekście ostatnich prac restauratorskich prowadzonych tylko w samej Twierdzy Wisłoujście. Podstawą artykułu są najnowsze badania, które pozwoliły zweryfikować i uszczegółowić historię rozwoju zespołu Twierdzy Wisłoujście w XIX w.
Developed since the fifteenth century, the Wisłoujście Fortress was for a long time the main coastal fortification of Gdańsk, which changed along with the transformations of the Vistula estuary and the development of military technology. This article focuses on the final stages of its development in the nineteenth century and the expansion of its external fortifications, when attempts were made to maintain control over the Vistula estuary in the face of significant geomorphological changes to the coastline. The article discusses the history of the outer rings of the fortress: the so-called Eastern Rampart and Western Rampart, as well as the Seagull Redoubt as the part of the fortress extending towards the sea and connecting it with the Westerplatte and New Port (Neufahrwasser) fortifications. The now lost spatial relationships between the fortress and the Seagull Redoubt need to be emphasized, especially in the context of the recent restoration work carried out only in the Wisłoujście Fortress itself. Based on the latest research, the article verifies and details the history of the Wisłoujście Fortress complex’s development in the nineteenth century.
