The article was presented as part of the second edition of the International Scientific Conference European Culture Commonwealth 2023, EuCuComm 2023 “The use of churches in Europe after their desacralization” (September 27–29, 2023 in Lubań and Jauernick).
The functional transformation of religious spaces is a significant manifestation of the secularization processes taking place in Europe. The aim of this article is to analyze the tensions between conservation decisions and the provisions of canon law in the context of adapting religious buildings for secular uses. This conflict stems from differing priorities: the protection of the physical fabric of the monument and the preservation of its religious character. Preserving historic interiors when adapting a church for secular use may lead to situations interpreted as desecration, whilst actions by church authorities, such as the removal of liturgical elements or demolition, conflict with heritage protection principles. The article highlights the need to develop an interdisciplinary framework for cooperation that will enable the reconciliation of material and spiritual values and the mitigation of conflicts between stakeholders in the adaptation process.
