Abstrakt: This article presents sports stadiums in the aspect of their history of construction, composition, problems related to redevelopment and contemporary role in the space of European cities. The selected examples confirm the phenomenon of sport as a domain which has influenced the architectural and urban structure of cities as well as their promotion on the global scale. The examples are also related to the fact that the presented cities organized important sports events (such as the World Championships in Italy 1990 or the European Championships in Austria 2008) which played a significant role in the construction of new stadium objects and the modernization of the existing ones. As a result, these cities have been able to apply for the organization of other competitions that contemporarily become a stimulator for revitalizing sports objects themselves as well as the grounds around them. These days, sports stadiums are perceived as prestigious urban objects being a mighty compositional form in a given space. In the evolution of this architectural form, one can follow the general rules forming sports infrastructure in the city with its cultural dimension.

W artykule przedstawiono stadiony sportowe w aspekcie ich historii powstania, kompozycji, problemów związanych z przebudową oraz współczesnej roli w przestrzeni miast europejskich. Wybrane przykłady potwierdzają fenomen sportu jako zjawiska, które w XX i na przełomie XX i XXI wieku miało i nadal ma wpływ na architektoniczną i urbanistyczną strukturę miast oraz ich promocję na skalę globalną. Wybrane przykłady wiążą się także z faktem przyznania tym miastom organizacji imprez sportowych dużej skali (m.in. Mistrzostwa Świata we Włoszech w 1990 r. czy Mistrzostwa Europy w Austrii w 2008 r.), które odegrały istotną rolę w budowie nowych, jak i modernizacji istniejących obiektów stadionowych. Dzięki temu miasta te miały i mają podstawy do ubiegania się o kolejne zawody, które stają się współcześnie stymulatorem dla rewitalizacji, nie tylko samych obiektów sportowych, ale i terenów wokół nich. Stadiony sportowe są dzisiaj postrzegane jako prestiżowe obiekty dla miast, kompozycyjnie będące silną formą w przestrzeni, a w ewolucji tej formy architektonicznej prześledzić można ogólne reguły tworzące infrastrukturę sportu w mieście i jej wymiar kulturowy.
