Abstract
The doctoral thesis aims to analyze the diversity of conditions and decisions that influenced the shape and form of the city in particular periods of its development, with special attention being payed not to the buildings or residential complexes themselves, but to their transformations, not to effects, but to processes. The city becomes the record of historical and social changes, while social behaviours depend on the form of the city. Depending on the criteria that we will decide on, we can distinguish processes that will determine growth or destruction of the city landscape. Choosing a city that is relatively young as NowaHuta, allows us to analyze the planning processes taking place during political changes and given legal system. Nowa Huta is also a perfect witness of the formation of the spatial planning system as we know today. The decision made in 1949 about building a new city and an iron factory, was the beginning of changes that resulted in creating an environment of contrasts, functions of different ways of utilization that were excluding each other, and urbanistic chaos.
