Abstract
Doors and gates made entirely of metal or clad with sheet metal were seldom produced in Gdańsk. Those that have survived represent a range of dates from the late sixteenth up until the mid-twentieth century. Most early modern examples come from buildings or rooms that needed to be secured, whilst metalwork doors of the late nineteenth/early twentieth century installed in public buildings were largely decorative, and are similar to ones seen in many other cities. Gates used in military and industrial buildings had very specific characteristics. New developments in ironworking techniques led to changes in the construction of metal doors. Initially, they were made from small sheets of metal (usually two per door leaf width) riveted together, then by the latter half of the nineteenth century, from large sheets of the same format as the entire door leaf. Sometimes double layers of sheet metal were used, either placing one sheet directly on top of the other or leaving a space between them. The decoration of these doors was consistent with the prevailing trends in art and architecture.
