Abstract
Odbudowa miasta była wyzwaniem i jednocześnie szansą, żeby naprawić błędy z przeszłości i wprowadzić postulowane jeszcze przed wojną zmiany: odbudować budynki w wybranych formach, odsłonić je, wyeksponować i uzupełnić nowo zaprojektowanymi obiektami.
A city’s panorama reflects its historical, cultural, and architectural heritage. It is a testament to history, the result of spatial and architectural evolution, and an important part of urban heritage. This article presents the results of research on the history of changes in the landscape composition of Old Warsaw as seen from the Vistula River. The key transformations of this part of the city and their impact on the panorama since the appearance of its oldest elements were analyzed. During the Second World War, many of the elements of the panorama were destroyed or demolished. In the first years of the city’s reconstruction, the implementation of the East–West Route reshaped the view, while preserving historical elements. The new panorama quickly became a symbol of the capital. The reconstruction of the city was both a challenge and an opportunity to correct the mistakes of the past and introduce changes that had been advocated even before the war: to reconstruct buildings in carefully selected historical forms, to reveal and emphasize them, and to complement them with newly designed structures.
