Abstract:The author’s intention has been to present several streets famous for being remarkable phenomena in the history of town planning and architecture. Each of them is a sum of separate buildings, sometimes outstanding but, more often than not, just elements of a bigger whole. Thorough investigations reveal the history of many particular places, their origins and individual fortunes. And yet, it is hard to decide if it is the dominant architecture of one object or a uniform style of more buildings creating frontages that matter more for the perception of an urban interior.
Abstract:Having as reference “la maison du gardien-jardinier” of the Villa Savoye, we propose a project for the gardener’s house, in some of the most significant “manifest-houses” of modernity. A construction of small dimensions that allow the autonomous life of a couple, that ensures the maintenance of the first house, with all the elements necessary for an independent life subordinate to the original project. A reissue of modern architectural laboratory that produced the “manifest-houses”, which will come into play both compared to the most unique architectural pre-existing twentieth century and contemporary architecture, the 21st century, a minimum habitat. Houses and landscapes designed by Aalto, Mies, Neutra, Gray, Bo Bardi, Scharoun, Smithson, da Rocha, Coderch … will constitute the material basis. An essay that integrates research, heritage intervention and contemporary creativity.
Abstract:“It is impossible for a thing to be and not to be at the same time”, and yet it happens that the externality, the objectivity, the physicality of a residential building is not enough to call it home. Nevertheless, man and architecture are stuck with each other. They form a relationship, a mysterious bond, which is governed by interdependence, responsibility and concern.
Abstract:The house materializes human endeavours in the realm of necessities of life, security, social and individual development as well as in the sphere of realization of aesthetic needs. Groups of houses built on the basis of rules of coexistence form cities reflecting the spirit of the times and the spirit of the place. What is the specificity of the house in the era of the information society? To explain it, I will present artistic visions, theoretical and practical concepts that affect the reality of the houses immersed in the digital realm.
Abstract:From a group of houses to a city, what matters is the aggregation system. Attempts are many. It’s very interesting to study an example that produced good results over time, different in scale and contents: the Olympic Games, and the way, almost hidden, but stimulating, with which they gradually “built” their “Villages”, over more than a century. You can observe the extraordinary ways that people and cities have invented, to create the kind of “temporary housing” that is the Olympic Village. A suggestion on the needed virtues.
Abstract:The idea of the Greek megaron, the prototype of a house and common place (tópos koinós), became a message related to space, a system of various codes, characters and symbols. The archetype of the house became synonymous with time serial replicas. The attribute of Hestia, the goddess of the hearth and home and daughter of Cronus (Roman equivalent – Vesta) was holy fire. Thus, it has remained a classic symbol of the idea of the home. All this helped to create a uniform system. The ancients deliberated long and hard about space and art. Their works revealed truth, beauty and goodness. Step by step, we are creating a cognitive apparatus for the laws of progress in the discourse on the essence of culture, and more about how the creative will and creative process assist in learning about the essence of truth.
Abstract:While the house is the most private place of life, its quality results from the collective and urban space that, combined with others, it achieves. Until the nineteenth century, in the old city this place was typically the street, a place of frontage and relations, and the landscape of the house itself. The crisis of the principles of construction of the modern city requires a new definition of the nature and shape of this space and, as a consequence, of the compositional principles of housing and its settlement units. While the remarkable tradition of studies developed on this issue during the twentieth century opened the block and replaced the street with parks and gardens, the question is still pretty much open.
The essay offers some examples and proposes a meditation starting from the project for a large decommissioned area in Milan.
Abstract:If there is a Magic Space of art, which is shown by reality, then there may also exist a Magic Space of architecture, not only in the form of hand drawn art. The affinity between architecture and literature, fine arts, and probably visual arts – is not obvious (likewise the Magic Space) but possible to prove.
Abstract:Contemporary research on the history and architecture of homes cannot be complete without the inclusion of women: women understood both as users and designers of homes. It is necessary to develop a new approach to the analysis of their role from an anthropological, cultural and historical perspective. It seems that in Poland, women did not begin playing a major role in the development of the concept of the home until the twentieth century. A new group of creative and increasingly better educated women embraced the new Modern architecture as they became not only the buyers and conscious users of homes, but also their innovative designers. The paper describes the shifts in the concepts and philosophy of the home. It also presents the achievements of Polish women architects during the Interbellum, the communist period and after the fall of communism.
Abstract:The author presents, from a historical point of view, the functional and aesthetic aspects of the placement of tall buildings in city centres. High-rises introduce into the urban tissue both serious functional and programmatic elements, as well as a form of sensation and artistic controversy. The defining of architecture in light of the abovementioned problems is currently one of the most important discussions about the creation of space in the twenty first century.
