Bernardine monasteries were built mostly in the suburbs or near the main communication and trade tracts. The building complexes, which were situated outside the city walls, had utilitarian gardens and monasteries, property included meadows, fields, forests, ponds and even the whole villages. In these cases monasticism rules were broken severly, because the medicant orders had no valued property. The forms of gardens did not survive until present days, only viridaries were preserved. This paper raises the issue of utilitarian monastery gardens as well as the Bernardine farms and its meaning for the shape of the local landscape.
