Budowle projektowane na wystawy światowe miały być miejscem prezentacji osiągnięć poszczególnych państw. Jedne budynki miały po wystawie pozostać, być trwałe, inne projektowane wyłącznie na czas wystawy były tymczasowe. Losy budynków potoczyły się w różny sposób (il. 1). Obecnie okazało się, że wiele pawilonów tymczasowych wbrew wstępnym założeniom trwa nadal.
Temporary pavilions erected for international fairs were to demonstrate countries achievements. Some buildings were meant to stay and become permanent and some, the temporary ones, were to be taken down once the fairs ended. Often, the initial purpose has changed for various buildings (image1). Later, there are many temporary structures which against their initial intentions are still being used on a permanent basis.
