Genius loci, w swym pierwotnym, mitologicznym znaczeniu, był opiekunem, obrońcą, strażnikiem danego miejsca. Dzisiaj idea ta może zostać odczytana na zasadzie wielowątkowej metafory, której znaczenie zmienia się wraz ze zmianą kontekstu. W architekturze współczesnej, w której duch miejsca wciąż zajmuje poczesne miejsce, z jednej strony zauważamy powolną dekonstrukcję tego pojęcia, ale z drugiej próby przewartościowania go, czy wręcz odczytania na nowo.
Genius loci was originally considered to be the guardian, defender, protector of a place. Today we can interpret it as a multithreaded metaphor, which changes when the context changes. In contemporary architecture we can notice there is a slow deconstruction of the idea but on the other hand – there are attempts to reinterpret it or even redefine it.
