Abstract: Szczególnym przykładem dzielnicy mieszkaniowej jest Główne Miasto Gdańska. W okresie powojennym trwały liczne dyskusje nad celowością odbudowy tej dzielnicy oraz nad tym, jak ma ona wyglądać i jakie pełnić funkcje. W ostateczności zdecydowano o odtworzeniu średniowiecznego układu urbanistycznego Głównego Miasta Gdańska. Kamienice odbudowano na nowych planach uwzględniających lepsze ich skomunikowanie, doświetlenie i przewietrzenie. Sposób odbudowy tej dzielnicy polegający między innymi na odtworzeniu frontów dawnych kamienic, ratowaniu kościołów i innych budowli zabytkowych spowodował, że Gdańsk jest obecnie szczególnym przykładem przestrzeni miejskiej: nowej, choć stwarzającej wrażenie bardzo wiekowej. W mieście takim jak Gdańsk ważne są nie tylko istniejące zabytki architektury, ale również substancja mieszkaniowa. Równomierna troska o obiekty zabytkowe, ale i budynki mieszkalne dają szansę na intensywny rozwój tego rejonu. W sytuacji, gdy Główne Miasto stanowi rejon mieszkaniowy, istnieje konieczność uwzględnienia potrzeb jego mieszkańców w sposób równorzędny z potrzebami miasta, jakimi są jego popularyzacja i prezentacja.

The Main City of Gdańsk is a unique place for living. After the war discussions have been carried on about the purpose of rebuilding this district, about the functions it should fulfill and how the city should look. As a result it's been decided to reproduce the medieval urban layout of the Main City. The goal was to create the better conditions for living in new buildings. The houses were constructed on new plans, considering better communication, lighting and ventilation. The way the city was rebuilt, including recreating the old façades, rebuilding old churches and other historic constructions, caused the Gdańsk is currently the unique example of the city space: it is actually new but making an impression of venerable. Because the Main City is the residential area, the inhabitants needs have to be taken into account in the same degree that the city needs as its popularization and presentation are. In city such as Gdańsk, important are not only existing architectural monuments and historical buildings but also the housing substance.
