vernacular trend, sustainable development – Western Lemko traditional constructions
Abstrakt
Individuality and inimitable identity are as important as artistic and historical values of the cultural heritage. Both the reference of new works to the local architectural tradition and seeking new means of expression with relation to historical, regional constructions are within the scope of broadly defined understanding of sustainable development.
Whether a specific Lemko construction tradition is still legible despite breaking cultural continuity and in the face of civilizational changes of rural areas is an open issue.
Based on the existing research and primary sources, an attempt to recognize resources of preserved objects, relics as well as rebuilding in one of the villages near Sącz has been carried out.
While religious buildings were and still are under protection, residential and farm buildings gradually lost their distinctive character giving way to new developments.
Numerous rules according to which traditional buildings were designed are now reflected in the requirements of contemporary energy-efficient and environmentally friendly architecture. The return to tradition can paradoxically constitute a way out towards the future.
