Abstract
The paper explores the primary function of a city and the role of fortifications in the past. It raises research questions about the impact of fortifications on urban growth and property divisions. The case study of Krakow, Poland is referenced to investigate the historical phases of city-fortress de- velopment and spatial conditions using various data sources. Space Syntax analysis reveals the hidden spatial structure of the built environment, strictly related to the post-military heritage. The study emphasizes the need for further research and awareness of the fortress' significance in the histories of cities. The implications for urban planning and development in other cities are concur- rent, which is a prelude to further and broader investigations.
