W procesie rozwoju architektury oraz towarzyszącego mu rozwoju i ewolucji detalu architektonicznego możemy prześledzić rozwój detalu od form czysto utylitarnych początkowo ledwo „skażonych" dbałością o estetykę, poprzez elementy stricte ozdobne będące dekoracyjnym ornamentem, a następnie zredukowane, w drodze bądź to programowych i ideowych manifestów, bądź też działań będących wynikiem inwencji twórcy. Można zauważyć, że współcześnie projektowane detale są nie tylko elementami zdobiącymi elewacje obiektów, ale ich autonomicznymi i niezbędnymi fragmentami tworzącymi całość i nadającymi budynkom ich ostateczną formę.
Over the course of the process of the development of architecture, as well as the accompanying evolution of the architectural detail, we are able to trace its changes from purely utilitarian forms - at first only slightly "contaminated" by an eye for easthetics - through purely decorative ornaments, to be reduced as time went by the influence of ideological manifestoes or the creative vision of designers. We may observe that details designed in the modern day are not only elements that are meant to be decorative to a building's elevation, but are also its autonomous and indispensable fragments that together create a whole that is a structure's final form.
