In the history of architecture a beauty was identified as a combination of proportionality, harmony, suitability and moderation. In the beginning of the 20th century architects emphasized also proper, logical and clearly visible construction, which creates „natural beauty” of a building. This idea was presented in modernist buildings and especially in many engineering buildings. Works of Eugene Freyssinet, Robert Maillart and Pier Luigi Nervi are considered to be masterpieces of art. In postmodernism and deconstruction aesthetic aspect of construction became less important. First of all contemporary architects try to design astonishing and mysterious forms. An exception to the rule is Santiago Calatrava, who still appreciates „natural beauty” in architecture.
