In this article I describe relationship between contemporary architecture and digital tools in designing. I think we can say, that there is something like digital beauty, which is connected with a new method of designing architecture. The technique of „scripting” – the manipulation of digital code – enables production of entirely new and innovative architectural environments. A new generation of structures is being created, that recognizes the potential of the computer not just as a sophisticated drafting and rendering tool, but as a potentially powerful tool in the generation of designs themselves. It can bring a refreshing projects, but there is also a danger of dehumanization of architecture.

What is Art? According to Greek aesthetics „The prevailing view is that Art is beauty perceived by an artist. This view is supported by yet another widespread idea that beauty is what we like and what we are fond of. An artist's task is to summon and show that very idea of beauty.” While searching for a modern definition of beauty, one can recall the ideas that a) „Art is the summoning of beauty, the creation of a vision, a reflection of life and an expression of form and matter. It is a mental state, sometimes even pathological, an expression of faith, a medium of mind as writing, a medium of harmony as a sound”, b) „Art connects people with similar reactions. It is indispensable for civilised life and for progress by means of: summoning, creating and shaping a form, which is materializing a vision”. Modern architecture in its large-scale character rises the level of aestheticization of surroundings, yet the philosophical beauty can be traced in pursuing: sense, concept, synchronous emotional states of a creator and a recipient, and deep emotional connections between shaping space and human life. It can be found if we are able to run a dialogue and, at the same time, respect local culture”.

Trying to assess objectively the aesthetic value of the modern architectural accomplishments we always meet various difficulties. Similar situation can be observed in apartment construction industry. It seems that the most serious threat to architectural beauty is domination of the utilitarian factors, and to its usefulness – an extreme subordination to aesthetic doctrines. Hence aspirations for gaining balance in this matter seem to be trivial yet extremely current.

There are cognitive methods of mind or sense nature which are important when considering the meaning of beauty in architecture and public space of town Kraków. We experience a crisis of beauty traditional apprehension, a crisis of art value in the antique way of sensing it. Frequent contact with ugliness and urban chaos may lead to the collection of so called visual memories redundancy. This way a huge advertise on the wall of National Museum Building can be recognised as a piece of beauty and the building can be found enriched, not disfigured. This way a new needs could be fulfilled. Hopefully this will not work. Hopefully the beauty will be retained – not replaced with new aesthetics categories in architecture.
