Monografia „Dom i ogród w krajobrazie Hrubieszowa – historia, tradycja, duch miejsca” to pierwsza z serii publikacji będących efektem projektu pn. „Rozwój lokalny Hrubieszowa – od partycypacji do realizacji”. Jest ona podsumowaniem prowadzonych prac naukowo-badawczych w ramach działania pn. „Hrubieszowski dom z klimatem”. Politechnika Krakowska realizowała badania w ramach Programu „Rozwój Lokalny” w latach 2021–2024 w partnerstwie z Gminą Miejską Hrubieszów. Prace były sfinansowane ze środków Mechanizmu Finansowego Europejskiego Obszaru Gospodarczego i Norweskiego Mechanizmu Finansowego na lata 2014–2021.
W monografii opracowano stan badań i źródła wiedzy na temat historycznej zabudowy mieszkalnej oraz ogrodów w historycznym centrum Hrubieszowa. Uwzględniono zwłaszcza domy drewniane jako najbardziej narażone na zniszczenie przez upływ czasu i brak opieki. Naszkicowane zostało szerokie tło dotyczące stanu zachowania i walorów tradycyjnej drewnianej zabudowy mieszkalnej i krajobrazu małomiasteczkowego wschodniej Polski. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono postaci Profesora Wiktora Zina, który łączy Wydział Architektury Politechniki Krakowskiej z Hrubieszowem. Jego prace w szczególny sposób wyrażały tożsamość miejsca ukazując charakterystyczne formy i detale architektury w krajobrazie kulturowym rodzinnego miasta. Przestudiowano zapisy dotyczące ochrony zabytkowej zabudowy drewnianej Hrubieszowa w aktach prawnych i działaniach konserwatorskich. Przeanalizowano plany, studia, dokumenty strategiczne oraz działania samorządu i instytucji lokalnych, które mogą się przekładać na zwiększenie skuteczności ochrony krajobrazu kulturowego i zabudowy drewnianej Hrubieszowa oraz praktykę opieki nad tym zasobem. Przedstawiono zarys historyczny kształtowania zabudowy mieszkalnej Hrubieszowa oraz typologię domów, ich architekturę i detal oraz sylwetki budowniczych domów hrubieszowskich. Osobny rozdział poświęcono znanym mieszkańcom domów uwzględniając aspekt dawnej wielokulturowości miasta. W monografii zaprezentowano też zasób, tradycje, ocenę stanu zachowania i wskazania do ochrony oraz projektowania ogrodów przy domach hrubieszowskich. Zagadnienia te opisano na tle złożonych problemów ochrony, współczesnych zagrożeń dla drewnianej zabudowy w krajobrazie miasta, ukazując dynamikę przekształceń w obrębie zabytkowej tkanki miasta od II wojny światowej do czasów współczesnych. Problematyce szczegółowej poświęcono analizę stanu zachowania detalu fasad historycznych domów drewnianych wraz ze wskazaniami dla ich ochrony konserwatorskiej. Efektem studenckich praktyk inwentaryzacyjnych architektoniczno-krajobrazowych i pleneru malarskiego są kompleksowe dokumentacje rejestrujące zabytkowe domy i ogrody osadzone w krajobrazie kulturowym Hrubieszowa. Dobre praktyki w zakresie aktywnej ochrony i rewitalizacji historycznej zabudowy mieszkalnej z uwzględnieniem partycypacji społecznej przedstawiono na podstawie doświadczeń rewitalizacji drewnianej zabudowy mieszkalnej Parku Kulturowego Miasto Tkaczy w Zgierzu oraz „Miasta Las” Kolumna w Łasku.
Hrubieszowskie zabytkowe domy i ogrody stanowią wartościowe dziedzictwo. Świadczy ono o wielowiekowym kultywowaniu lokalnych tradycji architektonicznych, buduje tożsamość kulturową miasta i niestety ginie na naszych oczach. Wypiera je współczesna bezstylowa architektura, niszczą je niewłaściwie prowadzone remonty i modernizacje. Równocześnie jest to cenny depozyt pozostawiony przez dawne pokolenia, w którym drzemie nieodkryty potencjał rozwojowy dla miasta. Istnieje konieczność wzmocnienia narzędzi skutecznej ochrony, podnoszenia świadomości wartości i wiedzy na temat dziedzictwa, stworzenia mechanizmów wsparcia dla właścicieli, kształcenia fachowców. Wykorzystanie potencjału tradycyjnej architektury drewnianej z aktywnym udziałem mieszkańców i samorządu lokalnego Hrubieszowa może przynieść korzyści lokalnej społeczności i poprawić jakość życia w mieście, utrzymać jego atmosferę i być realnym działaniem na rzecz klimatu.
Załącznikiem do książki jest plan z propozycją szlaku prowadzącego po starych drewnianych domach, które zachowują specyficzny „klimat” i ducha miejsca. Proponowany szlak może być zalążkiem dla stworzenia marki lokalnej „Hrubieszowskich domów z klimatem”.
The monograph titled “House and Garden in the Landscape of Hrubieszow – History, Tradition, Spirit of the Place” is the first in a series of publications resultant from the programme “Local development of Hrubieszow – from participation to implementation”. It summarises the research conducted as part of the “House with a climate” project. Cracow University of Technology conducted research as part of the “Local Development” programme between 2021 and 2024 in partnership with the Municipality of Hrubieszow. The research was funded by the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021.
The monograph covers the state of research and sources of knowledge concerning historic residential buildings and gardens in the historic centre of Hrubieszow. It especially considers wooden houses as the most vulnerable to destruction due to the passage of time and neglect. It outlines the broad background to the condition and value of traditional wooden housing and the small-town landscape in eastern Poland. Special attention is given to Professor Wiktor Zin, who connects the Faculty of Architecture at Cracow University of Technology with Hrubieszow. His works expressed the identity of the place in a special way by showcasing the characteristic forms and details of architecture in the cultural landscape of his hometown. The provisions concerning the protection of the historic wooden buildings in Hrubieszów in legal acts and conservation measures have been examined. Plans, studies, strategic documents and activities by the local government and institutions which may contribute to an increase in the effectiveness of protecting the cultural landscape and wooden buildings in Hrubieszow as well as the practice of caring for this resource have been analysed. The publication presents a historical outline of residential development in Hrubieszów including the typology of houses, their architecture and details as well as profiles of their builders. A separate chapter is dedicated to the well-known inhabitants of houses, considering the former multicultural aspect of the town. The monograph also presents the resources, traditions, assessment of preservation status and guidelines for protection and design of gardens at the houses in Hrubieszow. These issues are described against the background of complex preservation problems and contemporary threats to wooden buildings in the townscape, illustrating the dynamics of transformations within the historical fabric of the town from World War II to contemporary times. Detailed attention is given to analysing the state of preservation of the façade details of historic wooden houses along with guidelines for their conservation. Comprehensive documentation recording historic houses and gardens embedded in the cultural landscape of Hrubieszow is the result of a student architectural and landscape survey internship and a plein air painting workshop. Good practices in the active protection and revitalisation of historic residential buildings with public participation are presented based on the experiences from the revitalisation of the wooden residential buildings in the City of Weavers Cultural Park in Zgierz and the Kolumna “Forest Town” in Łask.
The historic houses and gardens in Hrubieszow constitute a valuable heritage that is unfortunately vanishing before our eyes. They testify to centuries of cultivating local architectural traditions and contribute to the cultural identity of the town. Unfortunately, they are being replaced by contemporary styleless architecture and destroyed by improperly conducted renovations and modernisations. At the same time, they are a valuable deposit for the future left by past generations, holding undiscovered development potential for the town.
There is a need to strengthen the tools for effective protection, raise awareness of the value and knowledge about heritage, create support mechanisms for property owners, and educate professionals, especially in dying craft specialties related to wood technologies. Utilising the potential of traditional wooden architecture combined with the active participation of the inhabitants and local government of Hrubieszow can benefit the local community and improve the quality of life in the town. It can help maintain its character and vibrancy while also being a tangible action for the climate.
The book includes a plan—a proposed trail leading through the streets of Hrubieszow, where one can still encounter old wooden houses peeking out from behind wooden fences and flower gardens, shaping the “climate” and “spirit” of the town. The trail could serve as the foundation for creating a local brand called “Hrubieszów houses with a climate” – promoting the cultural heritage and landscape values of the town, while also supporting the local development of Hrubieszow and the well-being of its inhabitants.
